The Decline and Fall of the Gay Village

One of the news stories in the current issue of NOW magazine focuses on the state of Toronto's Gay Village and the local businesses which populate it. Increasingly, the familiar spaces and places along the Church Street strip have moved out of the Village, such as Zelda's, or have become or are becoming extinct.

In this article playwright Sky Gilbert opined in one of the dailies recently that it isn’t just Church Street that’s on the wane. “When being gay is the same as being straight, there’s no need for gay anything. Gay culture as we know it will eventually disappear.”
