THE CENTENNIAL OF POWERED FLIGHT IN CANADA

On 23 February, 1909 Canadian pilot and member of the Aerial Experiment Group, J. A. Douglas McCurdy flew the Silver Dart from the frozen surface of Bras d'Or Lake for a distance of half a mile, thus becoming the pilot of the first sustained flight of a powered aircraft in Canada.

On 10 March, 1909 McCurdy capped off the groups efforts with a circular course flight at Baddeck of over twenty miles.

Having accomplished their purposes the A.E.A disbanded at the end of March, 1909.

Douglas McCurdy was the first licensed pilot in Canada.
