This morning I ventured to CAMH and met with Rosalina, an undergraduate assisting Dr. Jain in his current ADD study project, to participate in the pre-screening process of the sleep study, which will examine how ADD affects sleep. For the pre-screening, I had to write a battery of tests which was essentially designed to weed out only those candidates who conformed with the diagnostic criteria for the study.
Rosalina led me into a vacant room, where I could work undisturbed, and presented me with the tests. She briefly explained how to complete the tests and then left me to do my work. About 90 minutes later, I knocked on her office door and dropped off the tests. She told me to wait for about 10 or 15 minutes so that she could calculate the scores and present me with the results.
With no great surprise, the results, which Rosalina and I discussed to some degree, confirmed the presence of ADD, qualifying me for the study. What the pre-screening tests suggested was either a non-hyperactive form or a combined type of ADD.
Before we parted company, she set up an appointment for me to return in early December to begin the sleep study, which would consist of three consecutive night stays to monitor my sleep patterns.
